OpenAI is temporarily halting the acceptance of new users for its paid ChatGPT Plus service due to an overwhelming surge in demand, according to a statement from CEO Sam Altman on Tuesday. Following the introduction of new features and upgrades at the company’s inaugural developer conference last week, where users gained the ability to build custom versions of ChatGPT for specific tasks, there has been a substantial increase in demand for OpenAI’s artificial intelligence tools and services.

Altman expressed that the post-conference surge in usage has surpassed their current capacity, and the decision to pause new sign-ups is aimed at ensuring an optimal experience for all users. OpenAI, in its conference announcement, revealed that around 100 million people use its services weekly, with over 90% of Fortune 500 businesses building tools on the OpenAI platform.

The newly introduced feature allows users to create personalized versions of ChatGPT, referred to as GPTs, without the need for coding. These customized versions can be tailored to assist in teaching math to a child or explaining the rules of a board game.

In addition, OpenAI has plans to launch a store later this month, enabling users to discover specialized GPTs created by others and, similar to app developers on Apple Inc.’s App Store, potentially earn money from their own contributions.
